What does a great Manager Software Development Engineering do?

As a software development manager, you will lead an experienced development team that delivers high quality software solutions to help shape the future. Outstanding software development managers are accountable, trustworthy, and able to build lasting relationships with their teams.

Main Accountabilities –

    • Leads team of direct reports and aligns resources to achieve the LoB/functional area priority deliverables. Responsible for managing the complex delivery of business needs and partnerships in the execution and delivery of applications portfolio / internal business systems aligned to Travelport technology and commercial strategy.
    • Engages and contributes to leadership discussions to gain understanding of long term technology impacts and ensure development resources are educated and developing in accordance with Travelport technology decisions.
    • Able to recognize organizational view and understands impact on adjacent systems and long term impact of technical decisions. Acts as a lead technical and/or functional point of contact for large complex projects or portfolio / SME for internal business systems programs
    • Leads and manages performance of direct reports to create high performing teams and proactively grow capabilities and develop talent. Ensures team goals are met and releases are delivered.
    • Leads technical and/or functional direction and work flow for matrixed teams of designers and technical/functional developers responsible for products across one entire portfolio (or a full suite/sub sets of internal business systems).
    • Responsible for supporting the scoping, sign-off and subsequent day to day management of application delivery programs/projects, ensuring that the creation of the project deliverables are completed within the specified constraints of time, cost and benefits and to the required standard of quality
    • Interacts with and influences multiple work groups within and outside of LoB/Functional area including vendors/managed service partners.
    • Drives velocity by working closely with technical leads align all resources adequately, ensuring functional development work, maintenance and support production activities are completed in adherence to Travelport technology standards within agreed upon timelines.
    • Manage operations, timelines, budgets, developing methods and performance of team members ensuring utilisation of corporate project management tools as required eg: PPM, Jira etc
    • Drives compliance of platform, application and/or global architectural standards with COE architecture team and in compliance with TEP (Technology Enterprise Process).
    • Invests time in identifying and recommending development plans for direct reports to grow capabilities.
    • Generates ideas to improve overall system design and/or streamline delivery of product/system
    • Ensures high quality design is delivered on time and to specifications.
    • Focused on cost savings, efficiencies, high performance, high reliability, quality of user experience and architectural alignment of solutions.
    • Represents company to customers/vendors/managed service partners as part of a team.

Knowledge, Skills, Experience, Training, Education:

    • 10+ years relevant technical and leadership experience in a global matrixed business environment, including development of employees, setting goals and growing talent.
    • 4 year degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or combination of experience and education
    • Experience leading multiple projects/program and teams.
    • Experience developing, deploying or supporting commercial, customer facing solutions (either distributed or mainframe applications / internal business systems.)
    • Given depth and breadth of domain knowledge and experience, is able to drive and complete multiple assignments on time, to quality and on budget.
    • Ideally has held positions in Quality Assurance, software development, project management, operations and other technical areas in career demonstrating well rounded and deep command of cross technology disciplines.
    • Contributes to creation of business cases and manages project / program budgets
    • Expert technical and/or functional skills as applicable to portfolio areas and comprehensive knowledge across domain
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to present to senior stakeholders both internal and external to Travelport
    • Must have good knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel PowerPoint) Visio as applicable
    • Must have comprehensive practical knowledge of using Microsoft Project as a planning tool and working in a Project Server Environment
    • Strong experience of Jira for Requirements/ Story management and work management tools (eg: KANBAN if applicable to area)
    • Strong understanding of enterprise data structures, data modeling, and governance processes
    • Understanding of Java application development
    • Familiarity with the following technology: GitHub, JSON, XML, Maven, Junit testing, Sql Server, Writing SQL queries, javaFX, and Unix/linux
  • Optional but Beneficial Experience:
    • Knowledge and understanding of Travel industry/knowledge domain
    • Familiarity with agile (SAFe) team environment
    • Understanding of Travelport’s Open Distribution (OD) model, architecture and development practices
    • Understanding of RESTful microservices
    • Understanding of Travel/Travelport solution domain
    • Understand API contracts (swagger/openAPI) structures and object data models and how changes in the object model will translate into API contract
    • Understanding of basic Linux configuration and scripting
    • Basic understanding of cloud-based services

Salary Target: $124,700 – $145,400

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
