Unilever is one of the world’s leading suppliers of Food, Home and Personal Care products with sales in over 190 countries and reaching 2 billion consumers a day. Unilever has more than 400 brands found in homes around the world, including Persil, Dove, Knorr, Domestos, Hellmann’s, Lipton, Wall’s, PG Tips, Ben & Jerry’s, Marmite, Magnum and Lynx. Faced with the challenge of climate change and the need for human development, we want to move towards a world where everyone can live well and within the natural limits of the planet. That’s why our purpose is ‘to make sustainable living commonplace”.

JOB PURPOSE

As Legal Counsel – Digital and Disruptive Innovation, you are part of a specialist team advising Unilever’s Central Marketing and Communications Office, the Digital 4 Growth team and the global Marketing and Media functions. In this role, you stand shoulder to shoulder with Unilever’s digital pioneers, working on a diverse range of collaborative projects, partnerships and strategic workstreams. You advise on the legal, policy and regulatory implications of 21st century marketing, with a focus on digital content, agency relations, media platforms, adtech, ethics, privacy and online issues management.

Mindset and ways of working

  • You thrive in the space where law and digital marketing collide, and instinctively look for opportunity in the uncertainty. You’re a business person who understands the law and you are motivated to find creative solutions to some of the most challenging and untested legal questions.
  • In recognition of the need for speed, dynamic decision-making and the ability to switch direction in response to changes in the environment are highly valued. You role model agile behaviours, acting quickly, acting decisively and taking intelligent risks in real-time.
  • As we adapt to the changing demands of a purpose-led, future-fit business, you work on projects end to end, providing support to markets, gathering insight and finding efficiencies along the way. You are not constrained by functional or geographic siloes, so you provide full spectrum advice according to the business needs, drawing on insight and expertise from peers, trade associations and external law firms as necessary.
  • In driving the New World Legal Strategy, you demonstrate a strong sense of judgment and understand how your actions impact the wider business and the operating environment. You balance our energy and drive for rapid innovation against the value we place on integrity, trust and long-term sustainable leadership.

Responsibilities

Although this role is designed around agility and flexibility, you have the following core responsibilities:

  • Support the CDMO (Central Digital and Marketing Office) and the Digital 4 Growth Team, responding to general queries, assessing risk and providing strategic guidance on digital campaigns, strategic projects, activations, products and partnerships.
  • Support the Legal Group in relation to new ways of marketing, new platforms, emerging technologies and new models in our centralised and decentralised businesses.
  • Advise on all aspects of data-driven marketing, assess the impact of new and emerging regulations on marketing and media, and continually shape our data strategy.
  • Champion the highest standards of ethics in data and AI in the spirit of responsible innovation, driving transparency for trust.
  • Advise on all aspects of content production (including UStudio and UEntertainment), curation (including vloggers, UGC providers and influencers) and exploitation.
  • Manage partnerships with talent management agencies, producers, influencers, and music publishers.
  • Act as the lead contact Media, building capabilities within the Legal Group and supporting deployment of digital projects in the markets.
  • In collaboration with MBS Procurement, manage a diverse portfolio of marketing and media services agreements, securing advantageous terms in negotiations with global advertising and media agencies, media partners (including Google, YouTube, Facebook, Snap etc.), digital specialists (mobile, search, content etc.), media partners (Google, YouTube, Facebook etc.), tech providers, and digital service providers of all sizes.
  • Drive continued simplification in the contracting process, bringing Smarter Contracting into the CDMO and driving contract outsourcing and automation.
  • Participate in the development of new and existing global policies and mandated standards, promoting consistency of implementation and risk-related practices.
  • Conduct legal research in various areas of the law (e.g. privacy and electronic communications, consumer protection, data protection, intellectual property, media, eCommerce, etc.) for the development and dissemination of information and best practice.

All About You

You continuously look for ways to unlock capacity to give you space to re-invest in developing broader, non-legal skills including design thinking, process improvement, project management, change leadership, data and technology. Displacing low value legal work through process improvement, automation and outsourcing, allows you to strengthen capabilities in fields like data governance, digital innovation, project management and public policy. These non-traditional skills complement the depth of your core legal skills and expertise.

While expertise in digital marketing and media is not a pre-requisite, a passion for digital and tech, a strong sense of curiosity and an instinctive desire to learn are essential.

  • Law degree or equivalent practical qualification/experience.
  • Qualified solicitor with at least 2.5 years PQE in private practice or in-house.
  • Experience drafting a variety of commercial contracts (preferably with media and advertising agencies, and technology vendors).
  • Good knowledge of Social media platforms
  • Strong knowledge of Online advertising and eCommerce
  • Excellent knowledge of Personal data and privacy
  • Basic Knowledge of Technology development, licensing and acquisition
  • Good knowledge of Intellectual property rights

Lifelong Learning

  • As a member of the Digital Excellence Hub within the Legal Excellence Centre (LEC), you will help drive the transformation of our global digital capabilities across the Legal Group and the Digital Hubs.
  • In the spirit of lifelong learning, you will continuously improve your awareness and understanding of emerging trends relating to digital, data and technology, building the skills needed for a digital and automated world.
  • Lean into the Flex tool, taking advantage of opportunities to collaborate with others on projects that will stretch your skills and experience, and support others in developing theirs.
  • Lead by example in the use of degreed and encourage others to engage with the platform, sharing relevant content and contributing to the development of the Digital Pathways.
  • Prepare and upload materials to the Digital and eCommerce sections of the Legal Academy, the Legal section of the Connected World Hub, and relevant Yammer conversations/groups.

Recruitment Fraud

Cyber criminals advertise fake job adverts with prestigious employers as a way of stealing information or even defrauding individuals out of money.

In the most sophisticated cases, they will set up fake websites, which have a similar address to companies like Unilever. They even conduct fake telephone interviews and then offer candidates a role with the proviso they pay a fee for background checks or to cover work visa costs.  These types of attacks are becoming more common as more people are looking for employment in the economic climate.

How is Unilever tackling this?

Many of Unilever’s recruitment sites publish a warning to candidates about recruitment fraud. The Cyber Security team also proactively scan for signs of people setting up fake Unilever sites and act to close them down.

What can I do?

If you become aware of potential recruitment fraud, spot fake Unilever recruitment adverts or fake LinkedIn profiles, report them to the IT Services Desk via Una Live Chat.

Unilever does not accept responsibility or liability for any candidates who are financially impacted by recruitment fraud. Your vigilance is key!
